About Tarra Lu
I'm a Haitian-American abstract artist born in Brooklyn to Haitian parents, now based in the Dominican Republic. My work is shaped by heritage, healing, and transformation.
I spent four formative years living in Haiti, where I witnessed resilience and joy grow through community. The warmth, humor, and spirit of my people, especially the women who surrounded me, left a lasting imprint. They taught me that beauty and strength can exist even in the most challenging places.
Growing up between two cultures, I saw the contrast between media portrayals of Black women and the reality of the brilliant, bold, and beautiful women in my own life. That contrast became a creative spark. My art celebrates that complexity and honors the stories of women whose strength often goes unseen.
My path to art was anything but linear. I earned a BA in Legal Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and explored different cultures through study abroad programs in Argentina, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama.
But art kept calling.
What started with simple materials and stolen moments evolved into a practice exploring cultural memory, identity, and feminine wisdom through bold color and abstract forms.
I create contemporary works that blend ancestral memory with modern expression. My paintings hold the stories of women who survive, rest, and reclaim their power. Through my work, I explore what it means to break inherited patterns while honoring the resilience that came before.
Through my YouTube channel and my writing on Create Freely, I share my process and insights to inspire other creatives to trust themselves and find their voice.
I believe art doesn't just fill a space; it reveals truth, heals, and connects us to who we are.
“Every mark is a decision. Every layer, a choice about what to reveal and what to keep.”
